Our History
The history of the Foundation was born in Cannero Riviera, a magnificent corner of Lake Maggiore where Mr. Robert Hollman (Maastricht 1890 - Cannero Riviera, 1972), a Dutch businessman, spent the last part of his life.
His love for Italy and his attention for those who "cannot see the beauty of the world" were the main feelings that made Mr. Hollman decide to leave his fortune to the establishment of a nonprofit private foundation, aimed to take care of people with visual deficiency.
After his death in 1972, his friend and first president of the Foundation, Dr. Jan de Pont, carried out Mr. Hollman wishes and with the provisions made in his will, opened, in 1979, a " pilot center for blind and challenged children” in Cannero Riviera.
In 1986, due to a fire that destroyed part of the center, the Cannero Centre was temporarily closed and his guests moved to Padua as the Institute for the Blind L. Configliachi was creating a center dedicated to differently abled children. When the Cannero Centre started to operate again in 1990, the Padua Centre, at the behest of the Foundation Council, remained in business. The city of Padua, with its hospital and its University, lends itself to the objective of the Foundation to foster collaboration with public and private institutions and increase scientific research.
In 1997 came the need to expand the Padua Center due to the increase in the number of children and the launch of new diagnostic and rehabilitation programs.
In early 2003, in Padua, in the area of the Lower Isonzo Park, the first stone of the new headquarters of the Foundation was laid and it was opened on October 9th, 2004.
